When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.” That is the synopsis that we have for the new film.
The internet lit up this morning (UK time) as the trailer dropped. I even know some people round the planet stayed up to watch it,such is the level of anticipation the film is garnering. Two trailers dropped one for Japan one for the rest of us,they are more or less the same here is the Japanese one http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/watch-star-trek-2-into-darkness-trailer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=watch-star-trek-2-into-darkness-trailer. The ending on this particular trailer shows a hand placed against a pane of what i assume is glass or transparent aluminium, while Kirk with concern on his face touches the hand from the other side. Shades of Wrath of Khan? The other trailer shown here http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/watch-star-trek-2-into-darkness-trailer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=watch-star-trek-2-into-darkness-trailer is as i said more or less the same but in this one the final scene is The Enterprise (well Im assuming its the Enterprise) literally in San Francisco bay.
So what can we learn from the trailer and this poster. Well lets start with the poster,we see a devastated building nicely shaped to frame the villain in the Star trek Chevron. We see a skyline smouldering indicating devastation on vast scale. Was all this damage caused by just the villain? If so lets speculate as to who from the TOS canon it could be. First Khan strong yes, super intelligent yes. Embodied with super powers no.
Mitchell, strong yes, super intelligent yes. Embodied with super powers? Well if they feed in his transformation somewhere then yes and the revenge slant would fit. But lets not stop there in TOS there are two others that spring to mind first Trelaine, this i feel can be dismissed as he wouldn’t fit the revenge profile. The next person that springs to mind is Charlie X. He had super human powers,he has a motive for revenge and he could easily do what is shown in the movie. What troubles me about this one is the fighting scenes, Charlie was a boy stranded alone, combat techniques are not something he would have learned. So the puzzle continues. So lets turn to the trailer and see what we can gleam from it. We learn from the voice over that revenge is the order of the day,we see Kirk running through red shrubbery with what appears to be a Romulan, (brow ridges and shoulder pads can be seen). I am assuming Kirk is being chased as he runs off the edge of a cliff. Next Benedict drops into a fight, literally drops in from a great height but who is he fighting?, well at first you think Star Fleet but as Captain Revo pointed out to me you can see a Batleth,so Klingons?
Then we see Kirk hitting Benedict and we know from Leaked set photos there are images of Spock putting the neck pinch on him.
Kirk really seems to have been through the wars on this one,his blooded,he seems extremely angry in some scenes and he also knows his assailant given the segment when his talking to Benedict. As to his Character Benedict himself said “He is very ruthless. He is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the actions he takes have intent and reason.” Which means he is calculating,he has reason and a path laid out that he will follow. As to the War zone
well that for me is the red tree and the possible Romulan bit. he can be spotted wearing a black Starfleet jersey, and he speaks of his “return”, so he clearly has history with the crew. What of Alice Eve who is she? Well if it is Mitchell that’s self explanatory if its not, well your guess is as good as mine hopefully when the next trailer drops we will learn more. The action looks bigger and better than ever before while the visual effects, particularly the Ship rising out the water look stunning. Its moments like that where your thankful JJ took his time. the poster showed London suffering some devastation (Britain being Benedicts birthplace although shame we get pounded), this appears to show San Francisco (which is where Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy are based) also under attack from above. We know from the synopsis that Starfleet is crippled in an attack here, and that there’s damage to Earth crashing the fleet into the planet would certainly accomplish that, so seeing a starship about to plough a city was certainly dramatic. But for now we continue to speculate Alice could even be Rand. Although i doubt it,one thing is for sure come next year this will be a blockbuster which we give us another film and hopefully Trek back on television at some point.
