The Enterprise

Trek news and views 6th January

First of all let me start by bringing to your attention this fantastic video that is on itunes of Spock being speed painted by a very talented artist.
Uts about 8 mins long but it is an awe inspring thing to watch as she builds up the picture of Spock on the screen. She is a very talented artist. I will put the link in the show notes which you can read on the Holosuite website. Now i dont know the painters name because i found it on Trek, but it has a Youtube tag so if you have trouble loading it just go to you tube and see it there and comment.

Now some of you may remember how i commented in early podcasts about a British team working on a tricorder and how a hospital in England was developing a diagnostic bed. Well Scanadu have put a video of there tricorder up and you can see there presentation.
Again i will include it in the show notes so you can click on the link. but suffice to say if this comes to fruition it will be a major step forward towards non invasive procedures and diagnosis being preformed. The guys on TOS will be proud to know that they have inspired someone to try and make this and hopefully succed.

now some dates for your diary.

Now this week Star has its second part of its interview with Robin Curtis who played Savikk in The Search For SPock, a role i belive that was her biggest. So if you fancy reading what she has to say about taking over the role and what it was like to play a half Romulan half Vulcan woman you can go over to Star and indulge yourself.

Now some trek history this week to be exact Star Trek: Deep Space Nine debuted on January 3, 1993, and it immediately polarized the fan base. It was so dark and so different in every way from either the original Star Trek or Star Trek: The Next Generation that many fans tuned in or tuned out, and loved it or hated it… immediately

Also in January 2001,Ray Walston died the man known to all Trek fans as Boothby.

Star Trek: The Experience, a Trek-themed attraction,4-D films/simulator rides, a restaurant modeled on Quark’s, Star Trek slot machines, shops, a museum, well everything really, opened on this day in 1998 at the Las Vegas Hilton. it ran for more than a decade before closing in 2008.

The TOS episode “The Gamesters of Triskelion” premiered on this day in 1968

and finally today January the 6th Aron Eisenberg was born on this day in 1969. The actor is a fan favorite thanks to his recurring role as Nog on DS9.

Now a few notes as the discussion this week was about the incarnations of the Enterprise.

Enterprise (NX-01)

Commissioned in 2151, Enterprise was the first starship of the NX class, with a crew complement of 86. Enterprise was Starfleet’s first long-range exploration vessel with a theoretical top speed of warp 5.2

Maximum speed

Warp 4.5 (cruising speed)
Warp 5.06 (maximum speed)
5.2 (emergency)

Armaments at launch
Phase cannons,Spatial torpedoes,Polarized hull plating,Length 225 meters

ncc 1701
A constitution class Star Ship
Built between 2243 and 2245, Starfleet commissioned the USS Enterprise in 2245

Dimensions and Armament

Approximately 947 feet long (289 m total), 417 feet (127 m) wide overall (Primary Hull), the Constitution-class design consists of a saucerlike, eleven deck thick primary hull, separable from and dorsally connected to a cylindrical secondary hull, from which spring angled pylons supporting the vessel’s engines in two cylindrical engine nacelles. Each nacelle is 504 feet (154 m) long, 60 feet (18 m) in diameter. The pods operate via controlled fusion of matter and antimatter, creating the power necessary to propel the ship at FTL (faster-than-light) speeds. The Enterprise is heavily armed with offensive weaponry, the combined arsenal is powerful enough to destroy the entire surface of a planet (Star Trek, “A Taste of Armageddon”). The weapons include multiple forward and rear mounted photon torpedo launchers and phaser banks, of which there are five: Primary, Starboard, Port, Rear, and Midship. The Rear phaser and Rear torpedo launcher were depicted in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode, “In a Mirror Darkly”. Phasers derive their power directly from the Warp Engines. The class also possesses defensive energy shielding, which can successfully absorb a quantity of power equivalent to 90 photon torpedoes. All of the weapons on the Primary Hull are on the underside of the “saucer”.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

The Constitution-class starship Enterprise-A was commissioned in 2286 and decommsiioned after Star Trek 6 in 2293.
Compared to her previous incarnation this was a relativty small life span. but Star Fleet was by now rolling out the Excelsior Class ships to replace it.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C)

Launched 2332.

According to the TNG Technical Manual, the ship was built at Earth Station McKinley.the Enterprise-C was launched in 2332 under Captain Garrett’s command. The Ambassador-class NCC-1701-C was designed to show a gradual progression from the Excelsior to Galaxy classes. As a result, a few particular aspects of its design resemble both classes, and its size is intermediate between the two.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)

Galaxy class

The Enterprise-D is the third Galaxy class starship, after the pathfinder ship USS Galaxy (from which the Galaxy class takes its name) and the USS Yamato. The dedication plaque gives its commissioning date as 40759.5, which was intended to represent October 4, 2363.
A city in space with saucer seperation and a battle bridge in times of need.

The Galaxy-class Enterprise is armed with twelve Type X phaser arrays and three photon torpedo launchers, each capable of firing ten individual torpedoes at a time. One phaser array is mounted on the “cobra head” of the secondary hull while a photon torpedo launcher is mounted on the ventral aft of the saucer; both are inoperative while the saucer and stardrive sections are docked. The ship also has a high capacity shield grid and, according to dialogue in the Next Generation episode “Conundrum”,at least 250 photon torpedoes.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)
Soverign Class

The Enterprise-E, a Sovereign class starship, launched in 2372 from the San Francisco Fleet Yards under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Picard and most of the key officers were from Enterprise-D
the Enterprise can travel at up to warp 9.985
it Carries 12 Type XII Phaser Arrays (16 in refit), Quantum torpedoes,Photon Torpedoes

Only two Soverign class ships are mentioned in the show the other being the Soverign itself.

So now if you want to hear what happens next go to Itunes Podbean and Download Trek news and views and you can hear our discussion of the iconic starship Enterprise.
